Doctors Council - SEIU Members Ratify Allina Tentative Agreement With Over 90% Support
The agreement, following two years of bargaining, a historic ULP strike and recent ULP strike vote, is huge step forward for largest private sector provider union in the country
SAINT PAUL – Members of Doctors Council-SEIU at Allina Health voted with over 90% support to ratify the tentative agreement (TA) the union’s bargaining team and the employer reached last week. The new 3-year contact will go into effect immediately.
The agreement came after more than two years at the bargaining table and covers over 600 Allina doctors, physicians’ assistants, and nurse practitioners who provide Primary and Urgent Care. In addition to over 60 bargaining sessions, this TA follows a one-day Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike last November. That strike impacted 90% of Allina clinics, showcasing the group’s unity in winning an agreement that supports providers and patients. The Union believes it was the largest strike of its kind in the country’s history. Providers voted in March to authorize a longer term strike if they had not been able to reach an agreement.
Dr. Matt Hoffman, a family doctor at the Allina Health Vadnais Heights Clinic and bargaining team member for Doctors Council – SEIU, shared his pride in this first contract:
“I’m so proud that our group officially has our first union contract. It was a long process, but we showed unity and dedication in our push to win improvements for ourselves and our patients. We have more work to do to address challenges facing providers and patients, but today we’re celebrating this historic step forward. Thank you to all of our members who made this a reality and to everyone who supported us over the last few years!”
Highlights of the agreement include:
- Increased autonomy for providers including more control over their own lives and policies that affect patient care.
- Safety improvements to protect healthcare providers, staff, and patients.
- Fair pay and protections around parental leave, medical leave, and family leave.
- And many more steps forward.
The group won their union in October of 2023, becoming the largest private-sector providers union in the country and they started bargaining in February of 2024.
