DOCTORS COUNCIL ULP STRIKE UPDATE: Last Scheduled Bargaining Session Between Allina and Doctors Council-SEIU Ends With No Deal, Historic 1-Day Strike To Commence at 7:30 AM Wednesday

MINNEAPOLIS – The bargaining teams for Doctors Council - SEIU and Allina ended bargaining today with no deal at the last scheduled bargaining session for 600 doctors, physicians’ assistants, and nurse practitioners who are members of Doctors Council - SEIU. This means that what the union believes is the largest strike of its kind will commence Wednesday morning, Nov. 5th, outside of Allina clinics across the Twin Cities metro, culminating with a rally outside of Allina’s headquarters in Minneapolis in the early afternoon.

The Doctors Council-SEIU bargaining team has remained focused on reaching a fair deal to protect primary care for patients and providers, but continue to be met with proposals that would move things backwards as the healthcare crisis grows for families across the state. This resulted in a strike vote this summer that saw 90% support from those voting. The union submitted the required 10-day notice last month, with hopes that they would be able to reach a fair deal to avoid a strike, but Allina continues to propose cuts and changes that would be bad for providers and patients.

Matt Hoffman, a member of the Doctors Council - SEIU bargaining team, shared his reaction from Monday’s bargaining and noted the resolve of the group to stand up for primary care that Minnesota families rely on: “In an attempt to get to a fair contract, we presented Allina with multiple proposal changes today including articles on compensation, leaves of absence and PTO. Allina responded with only a single proposal. If we accepted what was on the table we would be facing decreased pay, worse benefits, and no help with staffing shortages or burnout. We will strike on Wednesday, November 5 and will keep working to protect Primary and Urgent Care.”

The 1-day ULP strike will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday at various sites across the metro. There will be a program outside the West St. Paul Clinic picket line at 9:30 a.m. with providers, the national president of Doctors Council - SEIU, and supporters. The group will also hold a rally at 1pm outside of the headquarters of Allina at The Commons on Lake Street.

Picket Line Rallies/Speaker Programs:9:30 a.m. outside the West. St. Paul Clinic(150 Emerson Ave E, West St Paul, MN 55118)1 p.m. outside of Allina Commons (2925 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55407)

In October of 2023, over 600 Allina doctors, physicians’ assistants, and nurse practitioners who provide primary care in Minnesota voted to form their union with the Doctors Council-SEIU, becoming the largest private-sector providers union in the country.

The two sides have been bargaining a first contract for nearly 20 months (since February of 2024), spanning over 60 bargaining sessions, with a focus on reaching an agreement that ensures their work is valued, they have safe working conditions and their voice is heard, so they can do what they do best: spend time with patients and keep Minnesota families healthy.
